PART FIVE: USE YOU
Logan Echolls wasn't nearly drunk enough.
He needed oblivion and oblivion was only a bottle of whiskey away.
He was sitting on the bathroom floor taking deep gulps from a bottle of whiskey between periods of pretending to dry-retch; loudly. The bottle he drank from now was one he had hidden in the bathroom cupboard, under the sink. He'd learnt that particular trick from Veronica's mother, in fact. Back in the days when the awesome foursome still existed. When he and Veronica were regulars in the company of the Kanes. Thinking about the Kanes and snooping around Veronica's old bathroom made him feel slightly queasy. Ashamed. Guilty. But whatever it was that he felt disappeared in a wash of burning alcohol.
He clutched the bottle closer to himself. Really, it's been the only constant in his life. Lilly was gone. Along with his mother. Duncan was God knows where and even his murdering bastard of a father wasn't around. Now Veronica, he knew Veronica would leave. Leave with Weevil, who despite having the worst nickname ever was a better man than he would ever be, even considering the biker, illegal, brushes with the law past. And even Weevil, who these days he related more to than Dick, would leave. Once he had Veronica.
The bottle was the only thing that stuck around.
Logan Echolls curled himself up around it on the cold bathroom floor and let one tear slip through the barriers.
*****
Eli Navarro watched Veronica Mars pace a hole into the carpet beside the couch in the penthouse.
“He’s been quiet for too long.” She says, agitatedly.
Her frustrated concern might have been amusing if Eli wasn’t concentrating so hard on some tiny visible sign that he had kissed her barely five hours before.
“Maybe he finally passed out.” Eli supplied, trying half-heartedly to calm her down.
“I’m going to check on him.” She says and Eli inwardly groans. Of course, what chance did he have against Logan Echolls? He was rich, good-looking, son of a famous actor/murderer. Really, he was all you could want in a guy. He had just enough of that fucked up rich white boy thing. What did Eli Navarro have? A few tattoos, a criminal record and a background from the wrong side of Neptune.
Any relationship he had with Veronica would just be like that relationship he had with Lilly. She would always, in the end, run back to Echolls.
Eli massages his temples. But is jolted out of his reverie by Veronica’s panicked shout.
“Eli!!”
He doesn’t have time to think how suddenly now she’s calling him Eli.
******
Veronica Mars was livid. Furious. And scared. Maybe even angrier because she was so concerned. She’d found Logan passed out in the bathroom, curled up in the fetal position around another bottle of whiskey.
Veronica tried insanely hard not to cry as Eli hefted Logan into his bedroom and onto the bed. She’d tipped the rest of the whiskey down the bathroom sink and then proceeded to search through the rest of the penthouse for any other alcohol, eventually collapsing in Duncan’s old room, crying silently with a bottle of vodka clutched tightly in her hand.
She barely notices the strong pair of arms wrap around her and gently lift her from the ground. She barely hears the comforting whispers brush past her ear. She barely feels strong fingers pry the vodka bottle away from her. But whoever’s holding her, she clings to.
And she just can’t let go.
*****
Watching Weevil comfort Veronica makes Lilly Kane a little jealous. It’s just a little spark before it’s washed away into the nothingness. She wishes she could cling to that little flicker of feeling but she’s too tired and Lilly just wants to sleep.
Lilly walks through the Neptune Grand penthouse, the silent and invisible observer. She watches Weevil tuck Veronica into Donut’s old bed once Veronica finally lets him go. Poor Veronica’s too exhausted to protest. Silently outraged, Lilly curses Logan for being such an arsehole.
But as Lilly watches Weevil prepare to leave, something comes over her. She’s appeared to people before. Mainly Veronica and once or twice to Donut and Logan. She thinks that she even managed to scare Celeste by appearing in the kitchen one day. But she hadn’t done it in a long time. A very long time. Since Veronica found out that, that bastard Aaron killed her. This wasn’t about helping Veronica find her murderer though. This was about making Veronica happy. Making Weevil happy. Making Logan happy. Because despite what might have happened while she was alive, Lilly really did love all of them. And they definitely needed some happiness.
It takes a lot of concentration. But Lilly thinks she can pull it off. And when she sees the shock on Weevil’s face before he reaches the door (she’s standing between him and the door.) and she knows she doesn’t have long.
“Don’t leave them.” She says hurriedly. “Stay.”
Then she’s gone again and Weevil looks a few shades paler. But he doesn’t leave. He settles down on the couch.
And Lilly Kane thinks about how fabulous she is.
