PART SEVEN: FUCK YOU
“Maybe someone’s trying to tell you not to run away, V.” Logan Echolls heard Weevil say.
The expression on Veronica’s face was terrifying. Only a couple of times had Logan witnessed Veronica looking truly frightened. And she looked it now. There were tears leaking down her cheeks.
“I can’t be here…” She whispers, shying away from Weevil’s outstretching hand, she tried the door handle again. The lock clicks, giving away flinging the door open and Veronica’s fleeing the scene.
Weevil shuts the door softly.
“There must just be something about me,” Logan says. “That keeps making her run away.”
“It can’t possibly be your winning personality.” Weevil snapped.
Logan picked up the discarded vodka bottle and saluted Weevil with it. “Well, I’ve destroyed any friendship I had with her. That’s something to celebrate.”
“She’ll be back.” Weevil responded, resolutely.
“HA! Always the optimist.”
Weevil held up Veronica’s mobile phone. “Nope… just a realist. That is, unless she has the money to buy a new phone, she’ll be back sooner or later.”

Eli Navarro wasn’t going to leave the penthouse, till Veronica showed up. If he did, and Veronica showed up there was considerable evidence to back up the assumption that Echolls would fuck it up.
To keep himself occupied he cleaned up the apartment, it showed the tension in the air that Echolls made not one comment about the Mexican cleaning the penthouse. At some point Eli had a shower, to come out and find his clothes missing. Echolls calmly told him that he sent them down to get laundered and lent him some of his own clothes. It took awhile for the clothes to stop feeling itchy but he never felt quite comfortable in them.
When all the bottles of alcohol were gone. Everything tidied up from the night before; Eli sat down with Echolls and played various X Box games and poker.
The day slowly, painfully ticked into night. Eli rang his grandmother to tell her, again, that he wouldn’t be coming home that night. He endured the lecture he got dutifully and waited for Echolls customary snark once he hung up.
It never came.
The night was long. Eli watched silently as Logan fell asleep. He felt strangely at home in the dim lit darkness of the late hour in the penthouse. So absorbed in his reverie that it took him a minute to hear the sound of the handle of the door turning. It was the sound of someone trying desperately not to make a sound.
Veronica.
He remains still, in the shadows. Logan only visible by the dim lamplight, clearly asleep. Her mobile phone sat on the end of couch. Near Logan but not really close.
Veronica snuck into the room, moving cautiously. It’s no wonder she’s cut out for the PI work. She’s barely a wisp of light herself.
As her hand clasps over the phone, Eli lets a whisper cut through the darkness.
“If you run this time, it’s all on you, V.”
*****
Veronica Mars panics when she hears that low whisper. Her heart flutters away in her chest and she’s not sure if it’s because he’s been there this whole time, which she didn’t notice and he’s caught her… or that it’s him.
The memory of his kiss still ghosted across her lips like a brand. It scared Veronica; it scared her that he raised a passion in her just as much as Logan could. But Veronica hated herself for. What type of girl can’t choose between two guys? She didn’t want to be like Lilly, no matter how much she loved her; Lilly had definitely done some morally questionable shit.
Veronica can just make out the silhouette of Eli in the shadows.
“Don’t run, V.” He says.
But the chant in Veronica’s head tells her to flee. She’s frozen with her hand clasped around her phone. Eli’s voice rendering her motionless.
“Stay.”
It’s the one word she can’t abide. If she stays she’ll have to choose and she doesn’t want to. Choosing will hurt her as much as it will hurt the one she doesn’t choose. Veronica opens her mouth to reply just as Logan stirs, mumbling in his sleep.
She’s out the door and in the elevator before Eli can say another word.
*****
Lilly Kane thinks she knows why Veronica runs. When they were younger. Before Lilly fucked Aaron Echolls six ways from Sunday. Before she toyed with Weevil. When she secretly though Logan was the one and that it would be him and her forever and ever and infinity plus two, happily ever after and all that mush, she shared one of her most torrid fantasies with Veronica.
Her fantasy had been a bit like the situation Veronica had gotten herself into. Two men, desperate for her affections in a tug of war that would eventually result in a hot, passionate threesome. Lilly had a secret fascination with two hot males making out. It would be all the more exciting if it was all for Lilly’s benefit.
But the look on Veronica’s face when Lilly told her this was almost bordering on revulsion. It was a look that Lilly had never wanted to see again. Veronica was curious about sex but she had always believed that there would only ever be one for her… and for a long time that “special boy” had been Donut. But he was gone now. So Lilly refrained from talking about her little fantasies with Veronica. Her “affairs” with her “lovers” were jokes… Veronica never truly believed that Lilly would cheat on Logan and Lilly wanted to keep it that way. She loved Veronica. For exactly what she was. Pastel pink and fluffy teddy bears. Strapless red satin was just a way to scare Veronica. But Lilly had to admit… seeing Veronica in strapless red satin… that was something that she would never forget.
It occurs to Lilly than that this Veronica, the Veronica of strapless red satin might not have that look of revulsion had she told her that she was screwing the Echolls senior… shock definitely but not revulsion.
Then Lilly Kane’s epiphany occurs. Maybe Veronica Mars isn’t running from the situation as such. Maybe she’s running from the pain.
